Synthesis of 2-Chloro-2-oxo-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane (ECP)

ECP is an extremely useful and versatile speciality chemical that is used as a starting material for a variety of products with biodegradable properties, such as lubricants, surfactants, pesticides and fire retardants. Such compounds are highly sought after given the damage other polymers are causing the environment. Furthermore, its biocompatibility makes it a suitable material for use in medical devices including contact lenses, stents, catheters and drug formulation.

The large-scale application of ECP is restricted due to a relatively costly production process. The starting chemical is very harmful and corrosive, requiring careful handling and strict health and safety procedures which must be adhered to. Such procedures become very expensive when producing the material on an industrial scale.

AF ChemPharm has developed an innovative safer method of production of ECP on laboratory scale (up to Kgs scale) reducing safety concerns dramatically.
